Timber Movement: Why Is My Board Not Sitting Flat

A board that starts to rock on the bench can feel like a let-down, especially when it is built from premium hardwood. Timber Movement, Board twisting is usually not a fault in the manufacture process. It is wood doing what wood does - responding to humidity, temperature and storage conditions.

Why timber movement happens

Hardwood is a natural material. It expands and contracts as humidity changes, and that movement is never perfectly even. If one face of a board dries faster than the other, tension builds. That is when a board can cup, bow or twist.

The risk is higher when a board is left wet, stored flat on a damp surface, or exposed to direct sun or heat near a cooktop. Washing one side heavily and leaving the other dry can also create a slight imbalance over time.

This is one of the most common scenarios. A soaking-wet board, especially one left in or near the sink, absorbs moisture unevenly. The fibres swell, then shrink as they dry. If drying happens too quickly on one side, the board can move out of shape.

That is why quality care matters as much as quality timber. Wash with a damp cloth or quick hand wash, dry it straight away, and store it upright so air reaches both sides.

Can a twisted board be fixed?

Sometimes, yes. Mild twist can settle when moisture levels return to normal and the board is conditioned with a food-safe board oil. Severe movement is harder to reverse fully, particularly if the board has been repeatedly soaked, overheated or stored poorly for long periods.

End-grain boards tend to handle movement better than other alternatives, but no timber board is immune to environmental conditions.

Sometimes the environmental conditions between the workshop where we made it and its journey and storage at its final home can cause these effects.

If the board has not settled down after a few months, place the board on a flat surface and tap each corner. Remove the foot from the corner that is unstable, fold a small piece of aluminum foil and push the foot and screw through the foil and re-fix the foot. Adjust till the board is comfortable.

How to prevent twist in a premium board

Keep it simple. Never soak it. Never put it in the dishwasher. Oil it regularly. Let it dry evenly. Store it standing or on a rack, not sitting wet on a bench top.

A well-made hardwood board is more than a kitchen tool. It is part of the ritual of cooking, carving and serving. Treat it with the same care you give the meal, and it will hold its shape and presence for years.
